TECHNIQUE:Transparent Underpainting, Glazing, Opaque Overpainting.
CONTENTS: 16 Pages, 3 Color Images, Cartoon Line Drawing.
After a painting by Scottish artist James Nairn (1859-1904) entitled "Auchenhew, Arran". Influenced by the French rustic naturalists in its color, handling and compositional devices, it also shows the influence of Whistler in the depiction of nightfall, a growing subject of interest among the "Glasgow Boys", of which Nairn was a member.
This composition was chosen to illustrate the changes in values which occur in the landscape when the sun is low in the sky and the light rays stream across the earth in lines parallel to the surface.
2. Frenchboro 3. The Thatched CottageSIZE: 16" x 20"
TECHNIQUE: Underpainting Glazing, Opaque Overpainting.
CONTENTS: 11 Pages, 3 Color Images, Color Swatches, Cartoon Line Drawing.
This painting is designed to illustrate the range of color that can be achieved with the use of a very limited palette which includes only the primary colors, black and white. It also illustrates the power of transparent underpaintings and how they can contribute to the overall effect of a painting.
4. Winter's Day SIZE: 16" x 20"
TECHNIQUE: Underpainting Glazes, Overpainting.
CONTENTS: 11 Pages, 3 Color Images, Color Swatches, Cartoon Line Drawing.
This project shows how to paint a winter scene that projects warmth to the viewer while maintaining the illusion of a cold, crisp late afternoon. The use of a warm underpainting provides the unifying balance between these two opposing natural conditions.
