1. Introduction & Materials (8 min)
In this powerful introduction, Matt Ryder turns you on to the key to painting roses and lays out the goals to simplify your process and add more color, vibrancy, and light. You’ll also get a detailed list of Matt’s favorite supplies for painting flowers, and the “must have” colors every painter needs in their palette to make their flower paintings warm and full of life.
2. Working from Photos (2 min)
In this session, Matt will give you deeper insights into how to make your paintings look more like your subject or reference image. He will also share specific examples of potential reference photos and other source ideas to help you gain greater inspiration and ideas for your paintings.
3. A Confident Start (9 min)
This session will help you start strong by toning your canvas just the right way for the painting YOU want to create. Matt will show you how to tone your canvas with a specific color of thin wash to harmonize your painting, and how to use the “no draw” method to create a guide for the full painting to come (removes the tendency to color in shapes…)
4. The Block In (71 min)
In this session, you’ll discover how to use simple shapes and matching color values to build a basic structure that you will develop in the next stage. In the process, Matt will show you how to bring more movement into your painting and create the feeling of sunlight by using small warm-to-cool adjustments to your color temperature values. You’ll also see how to use the background to sculpt form more precisely, which brushwork techniques can give you the exact textures you need, and what specific colors in your palette will enable you to bring realistic sunlight into your paintings.
5. Develop the Main Flower (38 min)
Once your foundation is in place, you’ll take the next step by slowing down and developing your shapes, colors, and values. In this session, Matt will show you how to develop your color value relationships within the flowers, how to create interest by adding bold color without making it muddy, and how to know when your edges should be hard or soft. Plus, you’ll gain new insight into how to paint petals without “painting petals,” how to make those petals turn, and how using a palette knife can make your florals pop, if you know when and how to use it. Finally, you’ll learn negative painting techniques to help you shape your flowers precisely, and when and where to add pure pigment straight from the tube (and when and where NOT to!).
6. Develop the Other Flowers (37 min)
In this session, you’ll use the powerful techniques you’ve learned to bring to life the other flowers in your composition. You’ll discover how to bring up your values using an unexpected color other than white (it’s not yellow either), how to adjust the “focus” of your edges in and out to make your flowers feel more natural, and how to make your background flowers look more abstract up close and more realistic from farther away.
7. Develop the Background & Foreground (29 min)
As your masterpiece gets closer to completion, this session will help you add subtle interest and texture to your background and refine your foreground elements for maximum effect. Here, Matt will show you how to make objects look transparent, how to paint reflected light, and how to use the “squint” technique to paint glass and water more realistically.
8. Final Refinements (17 min)
In this final session, you’ll get to slow down and observe what you’ve created, then add the last few details that will make your painting just right. You’ll learn how to step back and see the whole picture holistically, how to hone your instinct so you can lose the reference, and how to use detail brushes to add the “pièce de résistance” to your work. Finally, you’ll learn how to paint your signature like a professional artist to give your painting the finishing touch.
Matt Ryder is an award-winning British artist living and working in Dubai, UAE. A lifelong painter inspired by the natural world and the beauty of nature, Matt is a master at painting sunlight and has taught and exhibited extensively in the USA, UAE, and Ireland.
But it was a long road to get there.
Ever since Matt was 7 years old, watching his grandfather paint with oils in his studio, he knew he wanted to be an artist. But after an overly harsh tutor crushed his dreams, Matt walked away from art for over a decade.
It wasn’t until a friend asked him to paint for a party that Matt finally let himself start pursuing his passion again — and pursue it he did!
After taking the leap to professional artist, Matt quickly established himself and gained critical acclaim for his landscapes and florals both locally and internationally.
Now, Matt is excited to share his passion and his techniques with students all over the world. And after his most recent workshop on Painting Rocks & Sunlight helped so many of our students…
…we knew we had to have him back. And what he shares this time will change the way you paint roses (and more) forever.
