John Pototschnik

John Pototschnik: Limited Palette, Unlimited Color Soft Cover Book

WRITE A REVIEW

The heart of this book features 46 paintings divided into seven major divisions of the color wheel: Complements, Equilateral Triads, Isosceles Triads, Square Quadratics, Rectangular Quadratics, Extended Analogous, and Primary Dominant. Each painting was created using the same three primary colors, plus white. In addition, the subject, composition, and basic value structure of the paintings are the same, the only thing that changes is the color scheme. This is what makes this workbook special and unique. The book comes with a clear palette so you can mix colors right over those shown in the book. This is like a gourmet cookbook for paint artists who wish to expand their world of color.

The 96-page spiral bound workbook is just that, it is a workbook designed to be used in the studio, not to be read once and put on a shelf. It teaches not only the benefits of using a simple three-primary color palette, but also:

  • The structure and divisions of the color wheel
  • How to mix color and create your own color wheels
  • How to select the appropriate colors for your palette
  • How to mix beautiful, clean color every time
  • How to achieve color harmony…and much, much more

Practice color mixing on a piece of clear acetate laid directly on a selected image. Acetate is included with the book.

Included with each book are Projects specifically designed to reinforce what is taught. It will be a powerful learning experience.

Game changer.

As a person who did not attend college art courses where color theory is explained in depth, this book is a game changer.Ive purchased many books on color theory and this is ,hands down , THE one that explains theory so well.

Painstaking drudgery that will revolutionize

This book as well as his two DVD's on "Limited palette, Unlimited color" are back breaking ordeals in color mixing in total contrast to "direct" or alla prima painting.
I highly recommend both the book and the DVDs because it will take you to next level. But...it's not for the faint of heart. Just to go through mixing 9 shades of grey and attempting to paint an entire painting in monochrome (grissaille) is to finally, personally understand the classical saying that value creates the mood and adding color in the same value on top of that enhances the effect.

Absolutely wonderful book

I knew this book would help me when it came to creating color harmony, but I didn’t realize how much I would fall in love with this book until I got it in my hands! It is so clear and concise and makes wonderful sense… I am anxiously preparing my canvases to begin the journey through exploring my own limited pallets and understanding the relationship of not just color with the subject being painted, but the mood you create for the viewer to experience.

Best color book out there!

I have 2 copies of this book, and I will be buying about 20 more. I have formulated a 4 day workshop on color using John's book as a basis. I will give the book to participants, and hopefully, help them get started on the marvelous journey. I encourage EVERY artist to get a copy, read it, re-read it, then work through the exercises. You can't go wrong!
