As artists, it’s in our nature to pursue perfection.

We spend hours working and reworking our still lifes.

Adding more detail…

Refining every edge…

Perfecting every highlight…

And while it’s OK to care about craftsmanship and quality…

It becomes a major problem when you can’t turn off that critical voice inside your head.

“You need to add more detail here … and here … and here.”

So you keep painting.

You keep fixing.

You keep layering on information the painting doesn’t need.

Until eventually, your still life becomes stiff, overworked, and lifeless.

But what if perfection isn’t the goal?

What if the real secret to captivating still life painting is knowing what to leave out?

Master painter Charles Warren (C.W.) Mundy lives by this powerful philosophy:

“In a painting, everything should be negotiable — just because it’s there doesn’t mean it has to stay.”

In other words, instead of being a slave to every detail you see in front of you…

You become the director.

You decide what takes center stage, where light hits, and where shadows fall…

And most importantly — you decide when to stop.

Because when you bring in your unique vision...

Your still life transforms from a collection of pretty objects into a painting with meaning, mood, and intention.

In this brand new course, C.W. reveals his complete system for painting still lifes that radiate drama, believability, and emotional depth.

By the end of this course, you’ll learn how to:

» Stop overworking your still lifes and start painting with the confidence of a director who knows exactly what to bring into focus

» Master value relationships so well that you’re 75% done once you establish them — making the rest of the painting process feel effortless

» C.W.’s rarely taught approach to painting with mood and mystery

» Become the true “director” of your paintings — never feeling lost or overwhelmed by detail again

This is your chance to learn from C.W. and paint still lifes that radiate drama, believability, and emotional depth.

MEET YOUR NEW INSTRUCTOR:

C.W. Mundy!

Charles Warren (C.W.) Mundy is a Master Signature Member of Oil Painters of America and a Fellow of the American Society of Marine Artists.

His journey into painting began in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he started his career as a sports illustrator.

But in the early 1990s, C.W. wanted to explore fine art — so he left illustration behind and began painting everything from life.

What sets C.W. apart is his unique fusion of artistic mastery and fearless exploration.

He was a member of the Disco Mountain Boys, a popular Indianapolis-based bluegrass band, and continues to compose original music that reflects the same artistry he brings to canvas.

He even composed and performed all the original music featured in this course — creating a truly one-of-a-kind learning experience.

Beyond his own art, C.W. is a generous and inspiring mentor who believes painting should be a journey of joy.

This is your chance to learn directly from C.W. and discover how to become the true “director” of your paintings.

Your Lesson Plan!

Video length: 2 HOURS

Introduction

C.W. invites you into his home studio to follow along as he shares his proven approach to painting dramatic still lifes. He outlines the complete flow of the demonstration to come, encouraging you to paint alongside him and discover the joy of creating believable, emotionally rich still life paintings. This is your chance to learn directly from a master who loves both setting up and teaching still life — and who believes there’s no such thing as wasted time in your painting journey.

The Setup

In this chapter, C.W. reveals his complete system for planning a successful still life before you ever touch brush to canvas. You’ll learn what types of objects to choose and why color plays a crucial role in designing your setup. C.W. then walks you through his 7 foundational truths for painting — the non-negotiables that determine whether your painting will succeed or “circle the drain.” You’ll discover how to think about the abstraction of objects, shapes, and colors as you plan your composition. Plus, he shares his “voyeuristic” philosophy — cropping objects so they fall partially outside the frame, making viewers feel like they’ve stumbled into a dark room at dusk rather than viewing a staged painting.

Materials

C.W. reveals the paints, brushes, and tools he uses to create dramatic still lifes. You’ll discover why limiting himself to just three primary colors (plus black and white) has been eye-opening — a choice he wishes he’d made years ago, because it creates a faster painting process and allows for coordinated, unified color. He then introduces his fabulous brushes — large fat rounds as thick as your finger and his special “Mundy Mops,” plus an array of paint scrapers and palette knives. He equates having the right tools to a doctor reaching for exactly what they need to perform a surgery successfully.

Establish the Values

This is where the foundation of your painting comes to life. C.W. starts with a drawing that serves as a rehearsal for the painting — setting the stage for form and value relationships. The focus here is to establish values correctly, because once you nail them down, you’re already 75% of the way to a finished painting. You’ll learn how to cover most of the canvas with color; in some areas this serves as a base, and in other areas it may stay as-is. He demonstrates how to create variety in color, unifying the entire composition and creating drama with the darks. Throughout this chapter, you’ll learn to keep constant awareness of your focal point and set the stage to draw the viewer in.

Adjust & Develop

In this chapter, you’ll work to develop individual objects while keeping track of the focus of the painting. C.W. shows you how to review and appreciate what’s working in your painting. You’ll learn his mirror technique — viewing the painting in reverse to give yourself a fresh eye and instantly see what might not be working. Discover how to adjust chroma if you’ve gone too far, and how to use the palette knife to soften color and edges. Plus, C.W. demonstrates how to make the brass pitcher emerge from the background using a range of darker and lighter versions of the background color — creating form through subtle value shifts

Build Up the Flow Blue

This is where you bring your focal point — the Flow Blue pitcher — into sharp, believable focus. C.W. reveals how to build up color to make your highlights pop, as well as the continued importance of squinting to see value and placement accurately. Watch as he demonstrates his marbleizing technique of paint application to create a quick, colorful reflection that makes porcelain look shiny and alive.

Build Up the Brass

In this final chapter, C.W. completes the brass pitcher and fruit — bringing the entire painting to a satisfying finish. You’ll learn clever ways to sharpen or soften highlights depending on what the painting needs. You’ll discover what temperature to make highlights, and techniques for painting fine lines using multi-color paint application. Most importantly, C.W. explores key questions: How far do you take it? What is your believability factor? How realistic do you want the painting to be? This is where you learn to make the critical decision between the “suggestive” and the “statement of reality” — and why the suggestive is almost always more powerful.
