With over 40 years of professional painting experience, Frank Ordaz brings a rare combination of Hollywood expertise and fine art mastery to his teaching.


Taught by a portrait master at an early age, he learned a critical lesson that would define his career: “Study how light affects whatever subject you paint, in order to describe form and a sense of being.” He’s been painting portraits since he was 12, learning from masters such as Sam Hyde Harris and Theodore Lukits.


At age 21, Frank began making his living as a professional artist. His career took him to Industrial Light & Magic, George Lucas’s special effects company, where he painted backgrounds for Star Wars, E.T., Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and Star Trek. His work earned him an Emmy Award and taught him to understand light at a level most artists never reach.


What sets Frank apart as an instructor is his ability to make complex concepts simple. “I talk about planes and color chords,” he explains. “Separating the dark areas from the light areas is a constant phrase you will hear in one of my sessions.”
