Led by Jules Bastien-LePage, a new approach to painting and composition was explored. Painters moved out of doors to paint from nature, and the landscape was painted as it was observed, and not idealized.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003c!-- split --\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eInnovations in composition were expressed by high horizon lines and great sweeping landscapes behind figures, which were placed in the front-most plane of the picture. An immediacy with the viewer made these paintings a new and powerful statement in the art world of the time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePainting outdoors presented the same problems then as now, with changing light and imperfect painting conditions. Therefore, the best light was deemed to be that of an overcast day, so that the movement of the sun would not produce great changes in light and shadow. A soft, uniform ambient light permeated the paintings of the Naturalists because of this preference, and the extended outdoor painting hours it allowed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Naturalists painted from life, both for their models and for their backgrounds. These were not studio creations, although many of the paintings were large and cumbersome. To allow the artist to paint such large canvases, portable glass studios were constructed, some with wood heaters for colder days, so the artist could paint in comfort away from wind and occasional rain showers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe original painting, from which this is copied, is called The Water Carrier, and is in the collection of the Houston Museum of Fine Arts (MFAH), where I first observed it. There were over 100 artists brought into Poland to do the 65,000 paintings.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSoon after seeing the trailer for \u003cem\u003eLoving Vincent\u003c\/em\u003e, I saw Dena Peterson, one of the artists who worked on the movie, speak at the Plein Air Convention.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDena was not only a great communicator, she had the audience really engaged. It’s such a unique story. She showed the process of animating with paintings, something that had never been done this way before. Each “cell” was a full oil painting; that’s why the film took years to produce.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThen she started showing paintings…\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWere these lost Van Goghs?\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNope. It shows you the preparation necessary to produce large narrative works that mark the difference between a short, on-location demo and a painting destined to hang in the permanent collection of a museum. The painting is based first on an abstract idea of composition of shapes and values, with the subjects of the market sellers and customers being the central characters. Secondly, the environment of the bustling market set up under swaying umbrellas and local trees establish the outdoor ambiance. But lastly, it takes the viewer on a journey through the market in a way that a gallery visitor will never experience. While the characters are all conjured out of the artist's head, one can easily imagine being there right behind his shoulder as he directs the movement of the figure's body, hands and gestures to suit his intent about the interchange between the people in the scene. It becomes a moving tableau.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSeveral, small, on-the-spot studies allowed Scott to capture the color harmonies unique to this market, and to record the gestures that will give conversation between the figures in the work. Additionally, he took hundreds of photographs of other figures in the market to have as additional references for background interest and authentic costuming. During the painting process, it is as interesting to see how Scott chooses his references as how he paints them onto the canvas. Also, the painting emerges through a series of ideas that is constantly changing. He will first decide to paint a cart in one area, and then change his mind and turn it into a woman with a bag of potatoes at her feet.
