Some painters spend a lifetime chasing the glow on the water. Alex Dzigurski II was raised inside it.
He was born in California in 1968, the son of Alexander Dzigurski Sr., himself a celebrated master of luminous landscape and seascape whose work filled the rooms Alex grew up in. So from his earliest years, Alex was watching — watching how paint could hold light the way the ocean holds it for a single breath at sunset, then lets it go.
He graduated from the American Academy of Art in Chicago in 1990. But his real education came afterward, and it’s the kind almost no artist is ever given. For five years he studied directly under his father — painting from life and working beside him in the studio, absorbing the Dzigurski palette and brushwork.

A review of the palette, brushes, and canvas Alex recommends for capturing luminous sunset color. You’ll also learn why keeping black on your palette can work in your favor.
Chapter 3: Block in Basic Composition
The ocean is fluid and abstract, so this is where you loosely draw the composition in paint, laying out your shapes and the placement of foam and clouds. You’ll establish the all-important horizon line and sketch in your wave patterns and cloud shapes.
Chapter 4: Block in Sky Shapes
