Learn to see shapes by outlining a black and white photograph.

 

If you’re having trouble simplifying the landscape and seeing shapes instead of objects, try this great tip from Joyce Hicks’ watercolor video workshop, Hilltop Homestead: Print out your reference photo on white paper and then take a Sharpie and outline what elements you want to keep. You can even add some elements from your imagination. Then, take only those pieces when you create your value study.
