In this workshop John Salminen hits the streets of New York to gather candid reference shots for his urban scene.

John teaches a simple system for accurately transferring his complex image to watercolor paper. He lays a foundation with careful masking and vivid washes of hard-to-define colors. He concentrates on value relationships as he fills his landscape with shimmering streets and glowing neon. He uses mesmerizing reflective effects as an entry point to the composition and directs attention with white paper. John tones down conflicting passages with a mouth atomizer. John Salminen continually solves design problems, modifying colors in his foreground figure and lifting to enhance lines. The workshop includes exercises in perspective drawing and extensive discussions of design and reference photography.

BONUS CLIP

In this clip from his vide workshop, Urban Landscape in Watercolor, John Salminen explains how to draw buildings using two-point perspective. This drawing technique is a foundation skill for John's signature urban landscapes and can be used to correctly scale any object in a sketch.

Master of Values

I so admire John Salimen's work. It is impressionism through painstaking detail and I wanted to see how he created his fantastic paintings. I work in a much looser style but his explanations as he worked are so good that I learned a lot, especially about color and value. This is one of the best videos I have seen and plan to watch it multiple times.

Urban Landscape in Watercolor

This is one of the best instructional video's out there. He goes into details that make a painting pop. You learn things you didn't from other painters. Well worth every minute of learning! I highly recommend it! John Salminen brings New York or any city to life.

Perspective

Clearest show of perspective lines. Such a problem for me that I revert to painting animal portraits and flowers.

Packed with useful information

I came away from John Salminen's urban landscape video with six pages of notes and a huge dose of motivation. Two and a half hours of first-rate instruction from a first-rate watercolor artist.
