Paint along with Kathleen:

  • Go ahead … paint that complicated landscape scene!
  • This special tool will help you self-critique your work in progress
  • Plan for that spontaneous storm!
  • Why things are a little different when painting rough weather (Kathleen shows you everything here!)
  • Beware the shifting shadows … they play tricks on your eyes!
  • Be completely transparent!
  • Show your viewers what you found meaningful in the landscape … here’s how!
  • Using photos? They might be lying to you!
  • Manage your palette so you don’t get interrupted (yes, you have permission to buy more tubes of paint!)
  • Kathleen’s special tools that you’ll want to add to your own collection (she’ll tell you why!)
  • Were you taught NOT to put the horizon close to the center? Sometimes, it’s the best thing to do!
  • Lead your viewers through the painting by virtually holding their hand
  • When it’s time to remove what you don’t need!
  • Be careful … nature can be chaotic, but you don’t want to bring chaos into your paintings
  • Aren’t storm clouds all gray? You’ll be seeing cloud color in a whole new way!
  • And so much more…

A rumbling storm rolling through a majestic mountain range may be quite scary … the dark, heavy clouds growing as they gain speed … the thunder made louder as the hills and valleys amplify the roar … the wind picking up and raindrops pelting the landscape…

You fight the instinct to run … your inner creative stands in awe of this impressive performance brought to you by Mother Nature…

You don’t want to leave this storm … nope. You want to paint it!

You long to capture this moment so you’ll remember it forever — the images, the sounds, the feelings you’re experiencing…

How can you possibly paint this when the scene is literally changing every few seconds?

Shifting light, crazy dark shadows, billowing clouds in every color, an occasional beam of brilliant sunlight changing everything for a fleeting moment.

Maybe you begin to doubt yourself … you can’t paint this, it’s all changing so fast … there’s no way you’ll be able to recreate the depth and texture you see before you … maybe it’s impossible…

Don’t worry … There is a way for you to paint this magical moment … and do it very well! Even though you MUST get to shelter and stay out of harm's way.

You just need the right instructor to show you what to do and how to do it!

Kathleen will walk you through every step as she expertly prepares and paints the light and movement of a daunting storm in the Colorado Rockies.

Painting such a scene requires a few adjustments in how you do things, and Kathleen will cover it all…

  • Special planning and prep work
  • Studies and references
  • The right brushes and brushwork
  • Dealing with the quickly changing atmospheric conditions
  • Creating a sense of distance

And this is just the beginning of what you’ll discover when you study with Kathleen in Clouds & Distance.

You’ll love Kathleen’s casual teaching style and how she explains every step and decision so you gain a thorough understanding of the “why” behind everything she does. You’ll know exactly how each move will improve your painting skills and elevate the quality of your work.

A great video!

I thoroughly enjoyed Kathleen's presentation, and learned a few things that were new to me. I loved the transparency of her rainstorm in the mountains. I like that she's a self-taught artist (started by copying Master works when she was 12 years old). Excellent cinematography and editing too!

Depth of skill

I found Kathleen Hudson's video very well done. She has a clear and direct approach and showed me several landscaping techniques that have enriched my technique. Her teaching is so straightforward that it encourages me to try some new techniques. Also her knowledge of mixing colors shows she has a great intuitive grasp of painting. I highly recommend this video to anyone who wants to paint mountain scapes and needs help in design and color mixing.
