In this book, Sharon documents her most recent art expedition: a 6-month 1000-mile walk across France and Spain.
On 1 September 2018, Sharon Bamber, an award-winning plein air artist, set out to walk and paint the Way of Saint James, also known as the Camino de Santiago. She walked 1,000 miles through France and Spain alongside her donkey, Dupon, and her ever-patient husband, Simon. Every 5 miles along the entire route she stopped, set up her easel, and painted.
Each of the 200 paintings took 3 hours. The journey took 6 months.
With each footfall and each painting, Sharon slows down the hectic pace of contemporary life and lets the story of the land gradually unfold. She leads us along this ancient pathway, over mountains, across stone bridges, through old coppiced woodland, alongside mossy stone walls and past sacred springs and churches.
Through the 200 plein air paintings and accompanying narrative, Sharon shares her conversation with the landscape, reflecting on both the fleeting nature of the present moment and the timelessness of this ancient route, connecting us to a journey that has been continuously undertaken over generations for more than a thousand years.
All 200 paintings that were painted on the journey, each in full colour on their own page with short accompanying narrative
