Tuesday Tips and Techniques: Paint Better Lines

by Paint Tube June 16, 2022 1 Minutes

Today’s tip from Andy Evansen’s video, “Secrets of Painting Watercolor Outdoors” is all about making painting physically easier.

Painting up and down is much less natural for your arm than painting side to side. When you want to add something that calls for a vertical straight line, but you want it to still be gestural, like a boat mast, simply turn your paper and board 90 degrees so that you can do it more naturally. Andy advises caution though:  Make extra sure you’re keeping an eye on where you’re boats start because with a change in direction it can be easy to lose track of where the mast should actually start.
